Lungi Family papers
About
Lydia Lungi Grant was born and raised in the Florida Location near Calumet, Michigan. She married Kenneth Grant of Laird, Michigan, who was a DNR (Department of Natural Resources) officer for the state of Michigan. The collection also contains materials from Lydia's father-in-law Donald Grant, Lydia's sister Anna Lungi Nicholas, Kenneth Grant's aunt and uncle Louise and Adelbert Ely, and Lydia's brother Edward Lungi. This collection contains three scrapbooks created by Lydia Lungi Grant and several individual photographs of her relatives. There is also a memoir by Lydia's sister about their Grandmother Liisa, who immigrated to the United States from Finland as an older woman to live with the Lungi family. Liisa later died in a shipwreck while traveling back to Finland. Also of note are letters from Lydia's brother Edward to his sisters while he was in a tuberculosis sanatorium in Houghton County. He later died of tuberculosis. This collection was donated to UPLINK by Tammy Strasser at the community digitization event held in Ontonagon in July 2022. The event was sponsored by the Ontonagon County Historical Society and funded by the Michigan Humanities Council.
