Escanaba River Regional Documents Collection

About

The Escanaba River Hydroelectric Project is located in Delta and Marquette Counties. It includes at least four dams, including a dam at Boney Falls. The Cataract Hydroelectric Project near Gwinn is also on the Escanaba River, and some materials related to it are in this collection. Escanaba River Dam 1 was built in 1907, and Dam 2 was built in 1910. The construction dates of Dams 3 and 4 could not be located. The Cataract Dam was built in 1929. The projects have been owned by the Mead Corporation, the Upper Peninsula Power Company, and World Renewable Energies, LLC.

This collection is an artificial collection of digital government documents put together by the Lydia Olson Library at Northern Michigan University and made accessible online by the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives. The original documents are not available at the archives. This collection especially focuses on environmental issues surrounding the Escanaba River Hydroelectric Project. It also documents the engineering of the project and various filings with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
