Cyanotype photograph of the Steamer "Arctic" or "Artic" of the Lake Superior Transportation Company. A wooden propellor built at Cleveland, Ohio in 1864 for the Buffalo and Cleveland Transportation Company. Gross tonnage of 786 tons and dimensions as ff.: 193.7' x 28.1' x 10.8'. Carried both freight and passengers. Later, she was in the Union Steamship Company and ran to Lake Superior, in 1886-1887 being sold to the Hall Coal Company at Ogdensburgh, New York, when she was cut down to a coal carrier. On September 5, 1893, she foundered off White Rock in Lake Huron in a gale. The "Atlantic" and "Pacific" that were about the same size and with wooden arches also were owned by the Buffalo-Cleveland Transportation Company. |
