Cyanotype photograph of the Steamer Package Freighter "Empire State" of the Lake Superior Transportation Company, a wooden propellor built in 1862 at Buffalo, New York for the Western Transportation Company, carrying both freight and passengers. Gross tonnage of 1116 tons, with the dimensions of ff.: 212.0' x 32.7' x 12.2'. The arches used as supports were made of wood also. She ran originally between Buffalo, Milwaukee, and Chicago, later going between Buffalo and Duluth. She is a duplicate of the "Badger State." Both were sold to Cleveland in 1897 and ran between Milwaukee and Chicago as package freighter and passenger boat. In 1911, "Empire State" was made into a tow barge and carried stone from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. She was abandoned in 1916. Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. |
