November 27, 1886 A Detroit View of It Detroit has never taken more than a languid interest in matters relating to this part of the state, but her people begin to realize that the upper peninsula is actually a part of Michigan since they have heard about the railway projects which are now taking form in this region. As an index of their awakening, we reproduce from the Detroit Tribune of Wednesday last this editorial article: The new railroad project to connect Detroit with the upper pen- insula, with such facilities as shall guarantee open communication all the year around, is one that ought to be encouraged and aided not only by Detroit but by the people all "Along the line." The project starts out with the promise of success, backed as it is by a syndicate strong enough to warrant the success of almost any feasible project that might be proposed. The leek of direct and uninterrupted business connection with the upper peninsula has been a serious drawback to both peninsulas of the state. Many, we may say all, of the interests of the two are identical, and if this long cherished hope for a closer and more profitable connection is soon to be realized the people of both sections will have reason to rejoice. lt will give Michigan through connection with the Pacific coast via the Northern Pacific and with the Canadian northwest via the Canada Pacific, which will reach Sault Ste. Marie some time next fall. A new impetus will be felt in many towns along the line, and it is predicted that the "Soo" will proceed at once to take on gigantic proportions. It is merely following the logic of events to say that the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan are thus to become one in fact and one intact. Let the good work go speedily on.
