Hugo Korpinen (born 1932) discusses his family, education, his father's death due to a mining-related disease, recreation, what North Lake was like during his childhood, Finnish traditions, medical care, work history, his career as a mining engineer and mine superintendent, dangerous situations and accidents, ethnic groups, how the Depression and World War II affected the mining industry, layoffs, WPA programs in the area, strikes, the steel workers' union, changes in safety standards, and his father's experiences in sealing off the Morris Mine after the Barnes-Hecker disaster. |
