K.I. Sawyer Regional Documents Collection

About

Kenneth Ingalls Sawyer built a small airfield for Marquette County near Negaunee in 1937. The field was expanded into an airport in 1945 and named K.I. Sawyer Airport. In 1955, the United States Air Force leased the airport from the county. K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base officially opened in 1959. The base closed in 1993 and was turned into Sawyer International Airport and residential housing.

This collection is an artificial collection of digital government documents put together by the Lydia Olson Library at Northern Michigan University and made accessible online by the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives. The original documents are not available at the archives. This collection consists of documents relating to the K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base in Marquette County, Michigan, its closure by the Air Force in 1995, and its conversion into a civilian airport, as well as the impacts of those changes on the community and on the natural environment.
