Description / Synopsis
Doug Karttunen was born in Ontonagon, Michigan and was raised in the nearby town of Green. In this interview, he discusses the early history of Green and industries in the area, including agriculture, logging, railroads, copper mining in the Porcupine Mountains, silver mining in Silver City, and charter and commercial fishing. In particular, he discusses the early logging operations of brothers Charles and Benjamin McMillan (later called the Greenwood Lumber Company), early Finnish immigrant farmers, and the efforts of Thornton Green to promote agriculture and tourism in Ontonagon County. Other topics include anecdotes of Karttunen's childhood in Green, interactions between the English-speaking "summer people" and local Finnish immigrants, and details about schools, roads, churches, and cemeteries in the area. A woman named Sally also speaks briefly about her childhood in Green, but she is not introduced. |
