November 25, 1886 Thursday A Railroad Race There is likely to be lively work on the MSSM and A and the new DSS and A to see which line will reach the "Soo" first. The Duluth road is backed by a powerful syndicate, composed of New York, Detroit and Chicago men who propose to complete a chain of railways between Duluth and S. S. Marie, by using the NP to Ashl and and the DM and M eastward from Marquette. The syndicate has bought the last named road. New lines will have to be constructed from Marquette to Ashl and and from a point on the DM and M in Chippewa county, to the Sault. Brown, Howard and Co., of this city have contracted for the building of the new portion of the line, have purchased the necessary steel and have established their headquarters at Marquette. The upper peninsula is to be the scene of great railroad development during the coming year. To capitulate, we have the MSSM and A, the C and NW from Iron River to Gogebic; a probably extension of the M and N beyond Iron Mountain toward Qntonagon or Republic and the extension of the MLS and W from Watersmeet to Republic. One enterprise promotes others, for rivalry to "get there" first is as sharp among the companies operating in the upper peninsula as in Kansas and Nebraska. There will be a great consumption of forest products in the construction of these new railways and of lumber in building towns that will spring up along the lines. Hence there will be a new draft upon the mills of that region and quickened development of its forest industries. -Northwestern Lumberman
