Abstract/Description: | In this interview, Anthony "Tony" Smydra discusses his family history. Smydra's family's roots in Ontonagon go back to 1848. He describes how and why each branch of his family ended up in Ontonagon and the businesses and professions of various family members. Other topics include his relative Maximillian Smydra, the "apple king of the UP," the Pollocktown neighborhood in Ontonagon, and why Rockland, Woodspur, and Ontonagon were settled and which ethnicities tended to settle in each town. He also discusses how most of his generation left Ontonagon and why he decided to move back later in life. |
