Friday, October 17, 1890 Arrangements are being made by the Railroad Company to open a gravel pit between Newberry and Dollarville, immediately west of the old camps used by the Wood Department two years ago. The Railroad company intend purchasing 80 acres and will run a spur about a half mile in length from the main line to where the gravel bed is located. This will be quite a good thing for Newberry as it will be the means of bringing more men and families into the locality. The cost of constructing the siding alone will amount to over $2,000 and will furnish labor for a number of men and after the pit is opened up there will be a steady employment for quite a staff of men who likely make Newberry their headquarters. We are informed that the gravel is of excellent quality for grading, being even better for railroad purposes than that of St. Ignace. The St. Ignace supply is being rapidly used up and as a large quantity is being needed every year, considerable time and money will be saved by using Newberry gravel. The saving of frontage alone would more that[sic] repay the company, as the new pit will be more convenient for the west end of the road than that of St. Ignace and being of better quality, will enable them to put their road in good shape.
