A publication which evidently considers it the function of a newspaper to deal out sensations instead of news, has intimated that the resignation of Mr. S. F. Boyd, general passenger and ticket agent of the South Shore road, also Mr. Sedgwick's resignation as superintendent of motive power and machinery, are results of the policy of general manager Fitch, and that Mr. George T. Jarvis will also have to leave soon. There has been enough of this talk about the wholesale dem and for official heads on platters by general manager Fitch. In an interview Saturday that gentleman stated to a Mining Journal reporter that he did not desire any changes in the officials of the road, especially in the early months of his connection with it, and that he had endeavored to persuade Mr. Boyd to remain, but for family, as well as other reasons, he had decided to accept the Minneapolis offer. In this connection the general manager stated that, when Mr. Boyd leaves, the present chief clerk in the general passenger office, Mr. Ernest F. A. Rankin, will take the place - for the present at least - with the title of acting general passenger and ticket agent. Mr. Rankin is a Marquette young man, and his promotion will be learned with great pleasure here. As to Mr. E. V. Sedgwick, superintendent of motive power and machinery, Mr. Fitch said that his resignation came as a perfect surprise, but as Mr. Sedgwick has a finer opening, elsewhere he of course could not keep him. Mr. Sedgwick's resignation was placed in the h and s of the general manager, December 15th, to take effect January 15th. At Mr. Sedgwick's request the Mining Journal withheld the announcement until his successor should be chosen, but is led to refer to it now, although Mr. Fitch said Saturday that his successor had not yet been selected. Mr. Sedgwick resigns to become a partner in a big contracting firm which has work on h and in New Mexico, and after passing a month at his home in California on leaving Marquette, he will go to the territory named to take an active interest in the affairs of the firm. The rumored resignation of superintendent Jarvis is wholly without foundation, as Mr. Fitch says Mr. Jarvis has not been asked to resign nor has there been the slightest indication that he contemplated h and ing in a resignation. Now let us have peace; the new general manager is a railroad man from the ground up - as rival roads are rapidly discovering - but he is no ogre constantly searching for whom he may devour. On the contrary, he appears to be a very genial gentleman who already has the friendship, admiration and hearty co-operation of his subordinates and co-workers.
