Electronic reproduction of: Transcription from Daily mining journal (Marquette, Mich.), Jan. 5, 1889. Source; The Mining Journal Marquette, Mi. January 5, 1889 The Lake Superior News Co. The Lake Superior News Co. now has full control of the news and restaurant privileges on the entire line of the D., S. S. and A., and the managers report a very satisfactory business from the start. They are all young men and hustlers after business in every sense of the word. The company now has four eating houses, one at St. Ignace under the charge of J. Gaynor; another at Negaunee with A. Cannon in charge; a third at Champion with C. Cannon in control, and the fourth, headquarters for the company, at Marquette under the direction of Mr. J. H. Lewis, manager of eating houses for the company, who left Thursday for Sault Ste. Marie to see about opening one in the depot there. Mr. H. Cannon is manager of the company's news agents with headquarters in this city. The uniform adopted for the agents is the finest the reporter has seen in use by a news company. The uniform is of heavy flannel, conductors' blue, with black braid trimmings and gilt buttons, while on the collar are the letters "L. S. N. Co." The cap is the M. H. and O. conductor's cap without the gold b and and with the words "News Agent" in gold on the front. The company now has six agents on the road, A. McMillan, J. Q. Murphy, C. M. Burns, B. J. Waldo, Harry Coddington and B. Cottrell. The agents have no regular "runs" but the first in is the first out so that one day one leaves Marquette for Duluth and after his next report at headquarters here may strike a St. Ignace train. When through passenger trains are put on between Duluth and St. Ignace in the spring the company will increase its force of agents. |
