September 12, 1888 Wednesday The New Engines The 14 new Baldwin passenger engines for the South Shore, Nos. 101 to 116, inclusinve, have all arrived, and seven of them are already in regular service, while No. 108 left the shops yesterday afternoon for her trial trip, with road foreman Meehan in charge. Nos. 109 and 110 are being set up, and the others are awaiting their turn. Yesterday No. 104 took out the eastbound express on the Mackinaw division, being the first assigned to regular duty on that division. Nos. 101, 102, 103, 105 and 106 will run on the Houghton division, Nos. 104, 107, 108, 109, and 110 on the Mackinaw, No. 111 on the Sault branch, and the others on the main line when ready. Until that time they may used for ore. No. 26, W. H. Green's pet, which has been replaced by one of the big ones, will go to the Republic branch. The other engines displaced will be thoroughly overhauled at the shops here and will then be assigned to duty where needed. By the end of next month the 15 heavy Baldwin freight engines, now building for the DSS and A, will arrive here. DSS and A Locomotives Passenger |
