January 19, 1888 Almost a Fatal Accident An event that was very startling and wnich those who witnessed it, expected to see terminate fatally, occurred at the depot Wednesday afternoon at about 430 o'clock. Conductor David Bailey of the South Shore freight was running along the track in front of an engine, when he stepped into a slight depression and fell onto the track. Before he could recover himself however, the engine was upon him and it seemed that he was about to be crushed to death. Fortunately, however, the engine had a snow plow attachment, which was adjusted near the track and it caught up Mr. Bailey, and after pushing him along the track a short distance finally threw him on to one side. Engineer Smelberg, of course, reversed the engine as soon as possible and his promptness, no doubt, is due to the fact that fatal results were avoided. Mr. Baily was badly injured about the legs, but no bones were broken. He was taken to his boarding place on Gros Cap street and is doing as well as can be expected. |
