January 19, 1888 Thursday The Favorite Road Reached the Soo at 5 pm Wednesday, crossed the bridge at 10 am Thursday and returned 5 pm the same day. The South Shore certainly did its best to make the celebration a success and is deserving of much credit for its liberality in the matter. A special train of three coaches was run down from Marquette with 158 of the whole-souled citizens of that place aboard. The train reached the Soo at 5 pm and did not return until Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. General superintendent Watson and General Passenger Agent Allen were aboard and did everything as usual to make the trip pleasant for the guests. Thursday morning the train was run across the bridge. Notice was given that it would cross at 10:00 o'clock and fully 200 people gathered to take in the ride. The train was really the first passenger train to cross. Several specials containing officials had crossed before, but this was the first bona fide passenger train. The train steamed into the Canadian Soo where it was stopped, the passengers alighted and with the Marquette cornet b and at its head, marched down the street to the time of inspiring strains. After stopping there a short time, during which time the b and played several selections three cheers were given for the Canadian Soo, and the party returned to the train and to this side. At 2:00 o'olock after all the guests had partaken of a hearty meal they took the train for home. Just before the train was about to start Mayor Tim Nester appeared on the rear platform and calling President Chapman to the front, made a very pleasant acknowledgement of the excellent entertainment given them by the Sault, and returned thanks for the same. President Chapman signified in appropriate fashion the pleasure and the honor the Soo felt at their presence and cordially invited them to come again when the train pulled out with three rousing cheers for the Soo, on the part of the Marquette people. They were a jolly, genial, whole-souled lot of men and the Soo will be glad to welcome such people as guests at any and all times.
