Electronic reproduction of: Transcription from Sault Ste. Marie Democrat (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), Dec. 15, 1887. Sault Ste. Marie Democrat Source: - Sault Ste. Marie, Chip. County, Mi. December 15, 1887 Thursday The DSS and A Will Not Reach Duluth This Winter Duluth will not get the DSS and A this year. The road at present is at Dogwood or rather just west of there and north of Watersmeet. In conversation with one of the men whose business it was to travel along the line, it was learned that the road bed was finished, and all that was needed to complete the road was the laying of rail and building of a few bridges. Work has been suspended along the line since October 29. There are 12 miles of rails to lay from Bad River to the WC crossing, and 31 miles from that point to where it connects with the NP. Fifty-three miles of the road is completed west of Gogetic Lake, and from there on to Nestoria men were at work when things closed for the winter. It is intended and expected that the road will enter Duluth next May of [* or] June. A great deal of delay has been caused by engineers seeking for better grades. The company have had some trouble keeping men as they disliked the climate and locality to work in. The employes [* employees] consisted mostly of Italians from arge cities, and they disliked being shut out of civilization. Duluth may rest content on one point and that is that the road will be pushed as fast as possible. Duluth is the objective point and without her aid the road will not amount to much. -Ashl and News |
