December 15, 1887 Thursday Hundreds of Italians who have been employed on the Western extension of the DSS and A are now being sent below. "Their habits are of the most disgusting character. For the sake of saving money they deny themselves food and every comfort of life, subjecting themselves to disease and suffering. At Nestoria where they have sometimes been compelled to remain in waiting for trains, in the absence of shelter, their sufferings have been extreme, almost indescribable and but for the known fact that all of them had money, would have been cared for by tne authorities. Many are left behind with fever and other sicknesses, either to die or become charges of charity. |
