Source: Northwestern Lumberman December 3, 1887 Concerning one of the Peninsular Lbr. Co.'s camps on the DSS and A Ry., six miles west of S. S. Marie, the Sault Democrat says: "This camp is a peculair [* peculiar] one, inasmuch as it is a model of neatness and discipline. S.B. Wright is superintendent at Newberry and L. J. Buffum, clerk at the camp. The railroad divides the section where the lumbering is carried on so that the operations are carried on both sides of the track. There are 84 men employed here and ten teams. All through the camp the best feeling prevails and the boys have lots of fun, but are splendidly disciplined, at meals there is no noise but the best of decorum. The camp commenced September 8, and there are 15,000 pieces on skids, which represents 2,225,000 feet. These are carried to Dollarville where they are manufactured. The camps are built on the east branch of the Pine river." Peninsular Lbr. Co. DSS and A Ry. Feninsular Lbr. Co. D35 and A Ry. |
