Source: The Mining Journal Marquette, Mi. Septembr 24, 1887 Saturday Got His Foot Crushed James Scanlon, aged about 15, met with an accident Saturday evening by which his foot was badly crushed. At 5:32 a westbound ore train was coming over the Mackinac bridge on the South Shore, and just as the train reached the "fill" two young lads jumped on the ore cars. They were James Scanlon and a Smith boy-the latter, by the way being a lad who lost a part of one of his limbs while jumping on cars several years ago. Scanlon failed to step on the foot board and the wheel crushed his foot. While Scanlon was moaning with pain, Smith, he with the wooden leg-said; "You fool, didn't I tell you the train was going too fast for you to get on?" Scanlon was taken home and is now receiving surgical attendance. It is the old story-boys playing "smart Aleck" and jumping on moving trains. With the sight of so many lame boys stumping about town one would think they would profit by the example, but they don't.
