Source: The Mining Journal Marquette, Mi September 17, 1887 Ishpeming A Lively Locality Fifteen years ago Clarksburg, a little village ten miles west of Ishpeming on the DSS and A had nearly as many people as this city, and bore the reputation of being just as tough as any town of its inches in Mi. At that time the place had a sawmill, planing mill, charcoal furnace, and other industries, employing a large number of men. Later on the furnace and the mills were closed, and for the past ten years Clarksburg has been a quiet hamlet of perhaps 200 people. The work of building the extension of the C and W from Ishpeming to Michigamme has brought a great many hard characters into the county. Several hundred of them are camped not far from Clarksburg, and they make that place their headquarters on Sunday. There are saloons in the place, despite its decadence, and when these bad men get into the saloons and outside of a certain amount of fighting whiskey there is bound to be a row. Last Sunday one man had his arm broken, another had his jaw fractured in two places and another had several fingers broken at Clarksburg. There were fights without number, and the respectable people began to think of moving out of the place. The authorities there have taken the matter in h and , and will prohibit the sale of liquor on Sundays if the fighting and drunkennese continue. C and NW Stations DSS and A
