September 3, 1887 Saturday Ishpeming - The amount of travel between the Marquette and Gogebic ranges has been very large since the latter district was first opened some three years ago and the circuitous route between the neighboring districts has proved a great inconvenience, as well as a source of considerable cost to the people making the trip. During the summer months much of the travel between the ranges has been by water, from Houghton to Ashl and , but in the winter the shortest way of making the trip has been via Oconto. The Iron River extension of the C and NW was opened for business Tuesday and will shorten the distance by over 100 miles, and the completion of the DSS and A next winter will further reduce the distance by half.
