February 26, 1887 Saturday To Form The DSS and A Firday[*] a special meeting of the stockholders of the Mackinac and Marquette RR., formerly the DM and M was held at the office of A. Watson, superintendent of the company, for the purpose of acting upon the question of sanctioning and agreement which has been entered into between the directors of the company and the Sault Ste. Marie and Marquette RR., and the Duluth, Superior and Michigan Ry., for the consolidation of the several companies into a single corporation under the name of The DSS and A Ry. One hour later at the same place, there was a meeting of the stockholders the Wisconsin, Sault Ste. Marie and Mackinac Ry., to consider the same question. The Sault Ste. Marie and Marquette RR., meeting was held at Newberry, Thursday. In explanation of these meetings it may be stated that The DSS and A is a mere name until this action, is taken. Four roads will be consolidated in it, of these the Mackinac and Marquette RR., under which the DM and M is legally known since its sale last fall; the Sault Ste. Marie and Mackinac RR., is the old organization formed several years ago for building the branch to the Sault, while the Duluth, Superior and Michigan Ry., was formed to build the Wi., part on the road in accordance with the laws of that state, and the Wisconsin, Sault Ste. Marie and Mackinac Ry., to build the portion from Sturgeon west to the State line, in accordance with the laws of Mi. The MH and O will not be consolidated with the other companies in the DSS and A but will be leased by that company, retaining its own organization, as has all ready been noted in the Mining Journal. The DSS and A will at once become an actual corporation after this agreement is sanctioned, by filing articles in Lansing and by electing officers. As fast as the rolling stock is sent to the repair shop or new cars and engines built they will be lettered with the name of the new company, and the names now so familiar to upper peninsula people will disappear from view and from the memory. |
