January 22. 1887 Saturday Ishpeming - Just now the northern peninsula is reaping the fruit of the boom in railroad construction, which is unprecented in the history of that section. The corps for the survey of the line for the proposed DSS and A comprises upwards of 300 engineers. chain men, etc.. to say nothing of the hordes of sappers proceeding them and following in their wake. The line west of Sturgeon is divided into three divisions for the survey known as the Summit, Gogebic and Western divisions. The locating survey on the latter division is almost completed and the contractors, Rexford Bros and Hodge have commenced operation, they and the sub- contractors having many hundred man at work. Within the past two weeks reports at some of the operations on the Westerm division have reached others in this city besides Newberry and McMillan, who have charge of the interests of the syn- dicate which is building the road. Revenue collector Moloney has been deluged with letters written by Rexford Bros. and Hodge and the subcontractors complaining that they are hampered in their work by the buzzards of railroad construction: men who sell whiskey to all comers without a thought of the taxes due Uncle Sam and the authorities
