June 6, 1891 Saturday Fatal Accident A sight that caused brave men to shudder was witnessed at the South Shore depot last Wednesday morning. The victim in this case was a young man of 23 years named August Stenbok, who was returning from Negaunee to this city on train No. 117 going west to Bound siding. . . . When at Jackson crossing he was overtaken on the track by the flats, and climbed aboard only to ride to a sudden and shocking end. The train was not intended to stop at the Ishpeming depot. As soon as the car on which he stood reached the platform the fatal move was made. A leap, he staggered, lost his equilibrium, fell backward and was grasped by the moving cars and dragged into the jaws of an awful death. . . His body fell toward the mason work of the platform, the limbs crossing the tracks and before the signal could be recognized . . . and the train brought to a halt at least 15 cars had passed over the spot where he lay ... .. conveyed to the Ishpeming hospital . . . Where life be- came extinct at ten minutes past twelve. His left limb was completely dismembered just below the trunk, and the right limb below the knee mashed to a pulp. |
