In biography of William B. Hatfield

Hatfield, pioneer merchant of Ewen, Mi., it mentions that as a member of the firm of Clark Farnham and Co., Remus, Mi., he came to Ewen to engage in business in 1889.  An engine house and water tank were the only buildings to be seen on the village site.  He at once erected a building, put in a stock of general merch and ise and subsequently put up a saw and shigle [*shingle] mill.  DSS and A Stations - Ewen, MI
