July 13, 1889  Traveling Men's Association Organized  Among other pleasing results of the opening of the DSS and A as a through line is one not hertofore mentioned publicly; viz: the fact that the entire upper peninsula of Mi., and northern Wi., can be easily reached from Marquette, and the attractive features of Marquette as a residence city has induced quite a number of traveling men, representing large manufacturing jobbing houses, whose trade lies in the Lake Superior territory, to slect Marquette as a residence.  The colony of gentlemen engaged in this line of business has so increased that last Saturday evening, they met at the HOtel Marquette and organized "The Marquette Traveling Men's Association," which will be composed of such traveling men who reside in the Lake Superior territory or whose duties require their frequent presence here, and is organized to further their social relations and business interests generally.  The headquarters of the association will be in Marquette.  The interested manisfested in the movement was such as to insure a prosperous and useful organization, some 22 gentlemen joining as charter members.  After general discussion of the matter, a constitution was adopted and officers elected for the first six months as follows:  President, W. C. Brown; Vice President, W. H. Manness; Secretary, H. H. Mitchell; Treasurer, George Wallace.  A board of directors was also elected consisting of the above named officers, ex-officers and Messers.  Peterson, John Van Evra and C. H. Godding.  An adjourned meeting will be held at the same place today.
