An accident ocurred [* occurred] upon the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway near Ridge Siding, 6 miles east of Au Train station on the 29th day of October 1887, at 5 o'clock P.M. caused by Engineman Charles Saunders on engine no. 33, failing to obey telegraph instructions, as follows: Engine no. 64 eastbound A. Harrison, engineer got telegraph orders at Au Train to meet engine 33 at Ridge Siding 6 miles east of Au Train. Engine no. 33 C. Saunders got telegraph orders at Munising station to meet engine 64 at Ridge Siding 6 miles west of Munising (engine 33 was used for pushing trains east bound over Au Train grade and was backing while going west). Engine 33 stopped at Ridge Siding while a worktrain took the siding and then left for Au Train. Engineman Saunders forgetting the order to meet engine 64 at that point. Engine 33 and 64 came into collision on a curve 1/2 mile west of the Ridge Siding. No one hurt, engines damaged, but track not injured.* Estimated damage $1018.00  A. Watson, General Superintendent  *Men jumped from engines before they came together. Engine 33 was reversed and when they struck coupling broke between engine and tender. Engine 33 started ahead without any person on it and ran 1/2 mile when it left the track. Engineman Saunders acknowledges himself solely at fault for the accident, and has been dismissed from the service.
