Source: The Mining Journal Marquette, Mi. May 1, 1887 Sunday Ontonagon's own and only railroad, the O and BR is getting ready for its summer run, we learn from the Herald of that place, which says: The trainmen for this road arrived here on Thursday, and on Friday set to work getting things in readiness for the season's work. Quite a few men will be needed on the road at once ballasting it up and getting it in first class condition for the season's travel. Much work is to be done before trains can be run between this point and Rockl and , as there are some very bad washouts on this portion of the road. We are of the opinion that the Brule will soon be connected with the DSS and A, thus securing to Ontonagon the long sought for outlet. It is impossible at present to say how soon this will be accomplished, but it is safe to say it will not be longer that [* than] 18 months at the fartherest and possibly within a year. The DSS and A have their road completed by November of this year and it is then expected that they will at once build to a connection with the O and BR. It is plain to be seen that, after all, this road will be the first to give Ontonagon connection with the outside world. Our people must not give up now, for the distance between the two roads, when the DSS and A is completed is so short that the connection is a foregone conclusion. Ontonagon county, though kept back for years through not having railroad communications, will in a short time show the world that there are within its borders greater resources than the most sanguine residents ever dreamed of.
