Pier no. 18 of the Mackinac Bridge tilts (1 of 4)

Pier No. 18, the south cable bent pier, started to tilt. This was discovered from the constant inspections and surveying. Piles were driven to bedrock on the low side to stop the movement and digging and loading on the high side was done to right the caisson. It eventually was properly placed on bedrock. This caisson was concreted to within sixteen feet of the water surface and two round pedestals were built atop this foundation., Electronic reproduction of photograph.
