Aggregate placement (6 of 18)

A self-unloading lake freighter (J.L.Reiss of the Reiss Steamship Co) deposits aggregate into the caisson of one of the south (No. 17) anchor piers.  These vessels hauled limestone (dolomite) from the quarry at Drummond Island, MI, fifty water miles to the northeast.  Such steamers carried about 12,000 tones per load.
