The Douglass Houghton
Abstract/Description: | Photograph showing the steamboat "Douglass Houghton" downbound in the Sabin Lock. In 1899, the ship was sunk in the Middle Neebish Channel below the Sault, having been struck by her barge "Fritz." All shipping was blocked for five days; this spurred construction of the West Neebish Channel, which allowed one-way traffic around Neebish Island, upbound on its east side, downbound on the west side. This photo has been color tinted. |
