U.S. gunboat Michigan (1 of 3)

Cyanotype photograph of the United States Gunboat "Michigan," a sidewheeler made of iron built at Erie, Pennsylvania in 1844. She had a displacement of 685 tons and dimensions: 164 11/12' x 27.0' x 9.0'. She was originally barke-rigged with three masts and square sails on fore and aft masts. In the 1890s, she was somewhat altered as to design, making her appearance quite different than originally. The sails were taken off, a square pilot house was erected at the fore, and new masts were set up. On June 17, 1905, she was renamed the "Wolverine" at Erie, Pennsylvania. She has been taken care of by the Park Board since perhaps 1925. Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
