Lower end, State Locks

Cyanotype photograph of the lower State Lock, looking west. The wooden beam in the foreground was used to open and close the gates, being pulled by a cable along the beam to the windlass at right center. The building on the south wall was the lookout tower, used to sight boats as they approached from both directions. A bell in the tower could be used to call volunteers from the city to aid in locking boats through.
