Quinnesec's Cundy Mine

Cundy Mine Shaft, Quinnesec, Breitung Township, Dickinson County, Michigan, ca. 1896: This photograph was probably taken not too long after Quinnesec’s Cundy Mine opened in 1896. Some of the miners in the center are standing on either the top of a skip, the top of a hoisting mechanism or a makeshift skip in preparation to descend for their shift underground. Most of them appear to have sunshine lamps attached to their hats. They burned a paraffin-like substance to illuminate the miner’s work area.
