Wills and Carbis Meat Market

Wills & Carbis (Thomas Wills and William J. Carbis) purchased the Oliver Brick Building at 201 South Stephenson Avenue on the northeast corner of South Stephenson Avenue and East Brown Street in April, 1910, selling “meat and produce.” This photograph dates to about that time. A new front was added with a corner window, the three plate glasses measuring 90 x 100 inches in size. The basement was enlarged to 40 x 45 feet and a new hardwood floor was laid in the market. A chemical refrigerator, with a cooling capacity of 10,000 pounds of ice in twenty-four hours, was installed, operated by an eight-horse-power electric motor.
