June attended the early consciousness-raising groups but did not become closely involved with The Women's Center in Marquette, Michigan until Judy Russell, the center's first counselor, created a paraprofessional program of counselors and asked June to join. Due to her work with The Women's Center, June decided to go back to school. She received a master's degree in psychology from Northern Michigan University. June describes some of the training and workshops that The Women's Center offered in more detail, talking about what they did and how it affected women.
