Kitch-iti-kipi (Big Spring) Collection

Kitch-iti-kipi, also known as Big Spring or the Mirror of Heaven, is a spring in Schoolcraft County near Thompson Township and Manistique known for its clear green waters. John Bellaire, a store owner in Manistique, popularized the site as a tourist attraction in the 1920s. Many of the Native American legends associated with the site were likely made up by Bellaire. The Palms Book Land Company sold the spring to the state of Michigan in 1926, and it became Palms Book State Park. This collection contains newspaper clippings, photographs, and advertisements about Kitch-iti-kipi, also known as Big Spring.
