Oral histories of underground iron miners

In 1994, Mary Tippett Andes conducted oral history interviews with six former underground iron miners and two wives of underground iron miners as part of her research for her book "The Last Generation Underground." Each miner recounts his experiences working for the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company on the Marquette Iron Range in Marquette County, Michigan.

All of the audio recordings and transcripts are available online. Some of the transcripts are incomplete. See the item descriptions for details. The analog collection available at the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives also includes project documentation, photographs, and a copy of "The Last Generation Underground."
